The French landscape painter Antoine Guillemet was a close associate of the Impressionist circle. His friends included Manet, Cézanne and Zola. French landscape painting at this time tended towards small, quickly executed pictures which aim to convey the sense of a place at a particular moment. Guillemet’s picture contrasts to many contemporary views by English artists in our collections, which depict the causeway full of figures and narrative detail.
