In his 'fêtes-galantes' Adolphe Monticelli reinterpreted the themes of artists such as Jean-Antoine Watteau with elegant courtly figures in outdoor settings. This painting therefore reflects the contemporary revival of Rococo art, as well as the influence of Narcisse Diaz with whom Monticelli sometimes painted. The panel is unprimed and the wood is visible in places – the artist used the red colour of the wood as though it were a ground. Many of Monticelli's later pieces were produced on small wooden panels and are distinguished by their richly textured surfaces, vibrant colour, thick impasto and an increasing abstraction of figures and settings.
