Dr Kuenssberg practised in Edinburgh until 1981. Kuenssberg arrived in Britain from Germany in 1933 after his mother decided that it was unsafe there, and he initially went to Cambridge where he trained as a laboratory technician. Having always wanted to become a medical doctor he wrote to every British Medical School in the country but received just one positive reply from Edinburgh. On graduation in 1939, his alien status restricted his ability to travel and practice medicine. He was interred for a short while before being able to resume his medical career in Edinburgh, where he practised for most of his career with the notable GP Charles Munro. He was also one of the co-signatories of a letter to the British Medical Journal in 1962 warning of the early signs of the effects of thalidomide.
Another portrait of Dr Kuenssberg is hung in the library of the RCGP Scottish Council in Edinburgh.
