The statue represents the King at his Coronation in 1901. He is shown wearing the uniform of a Field-Marshall under the Coronation robe and carrying the sceptre (subsequently broken), signifying authority; and orb, signifying world empire. In addition to the statue of the King, three cast bronze sculptures are mounted on the pedestal: a man with his arm protectively around a boy representing 'Education fostering progress'; a corresponding female figure representing 'Peace'; and further small groups representing 'Sympathy' and 'Understanding'. On the face of the pedestal is a representation of Saint George and the Dragon, with an elaborate crown above. The originals of these sculptures were stolen in the 1980s, and were replaced in 2009 when the sculpture was restored.
