Perhaps connected with the series of portraits of Constables of Queenborough Castle which Vertue supposed to be by Lucas Cornelisz. The castle, which appears in the painting, was rebuilt in the reign of Edward III, who granted a charter to the town, and named it in honour of his queen, Philippa. Queenborough Castle, now demolished, guarded the Thames on the Isle of Sheppey. The series for Queenborough was commissioned in 1598 by Sir Edward Hoby, and consequently cannot be by Cornelisz himself.
