Edward Goodman (1476–1560) was a mercer of Ruthin in Denbighshire. He is depicted wearing the square cap and scarlet, fur-trimmed gown of a prosperous tradesman, with a mourning ring decorated with the memento mori device of a skull, and holding a scroll inscribed '(O)fferen pawb yn i galon' (each man's prayer [is] in his heart). Two mottoes also appear at the top right: 'HEB DDVW DDIM/DVW A DIGON' ('Without God, without anything, God is enough'), followed by 'BE HVMBL AND MEEKE/SOBRIE IVSTE PIE' ('Be humble and meek/Soberly, justly, piously').
