He is dressed in a black tailcoat, waistcoat and trousers, with a white shirt and a large black bow tie. He leans on the arm of the red upholstered chair in which he is seated. He holds in his left hand a wooden palette, two brushes and a mahl stick, which runs diagonally left to right.
