The sitter was educated at St Paul's School and The Queen's College, Oxford. He gained MA at Oxford in 1678 and FRS in 1678. He was a Savilian professor of geometry at Oxford in 1703; DCL, Oxford, 1710; secretary to Royal Society, 1713 and astronomer royal in 1721. He accurately predicted the return in 1758 of the comet of 1531, 1607, and 1682 and first recommended employment of transits of Venus for ascertaining the sun's distance.
