The sitter was a Fellow of Queen's in 1694, chaplain to Archbishop Tenison and Librarian at Lambeth (where he began to catalogue the library), Archdeacon of Surrey, 1710, Bishop of Lincoln from 1716 to 1723 and Bishop of London from 1723 to 1748. He used his influence with George I against masquerades at court and was Walpole's ecclesiastical adviser. The artist, Vanderbank had a considerable portrait practice in London following the death of Kneller. This is a replica of a signed and dated portrait in the Bodleian Library.
