A close follower of Leonardo da Vinci, Solario was also interested in northern prints and in the work of Andrea Mantegna. This painting is datable to c.1505–1507. Unusually, the subject combines the scenes of Pilate presenting Christ to the people with the words 'Ecce Homo' or 'Behold the man' (John 19: 5) and the mocking of Christ (Matthew 27: 28–31). A variation is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Abbeville.
