Elliot was born in 1781 in Masborough, Rotherham. He began work at the age of 16 at his father’s iron foundry. In 1806 Elliot married Frances Gartside. He invested her fortune in his father’s foundry business. The firm had money problems, and in 1816 Elliot lost everything and was declared bankrupt. Three years later, he borrowed money from his sisters-in-law, and set-up business as an iron dealer. This time his business was a success. Elliot wrote his first poem, 'Vernal Walk', at the age of 17. He is best known as the ‘Corn Law Rymer’. After his time as a bankrupt, he identified with the poor. He worked hard to try to make food cheaper for everyone, and the Corn Laws prevented this. Elliot’s poetic political speeches against the Corn Laws became his Corn Law Rymes.
