This is the original plaster version of Fergusson's sculpture in brass. He intended it to represent Eastre, the Saxon goddess of spring, a season associated with the return of the sun. He wanted the symmetrical spheres and curves to evoke life and regenerative power.

Rather than modelling the head from clay as was the norm, Fergusson achieved clarity of line by incising directly into the plaster. This gives the sculpture a modernist edge, enhanced later by casting the work in brass. The pared-down treatment of form was paralleled by greater geometry in Fergusson's paintings.
