The East Coast harbour in question is Arbroath. The artist taught in the Summer School at Hospitalfield House, Arbroath in the mid-1960s, during his summer vacation from his lecturing post at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee.

There is a preparatory drawing in a sketchbook containing several drawings of the fishing port of Arbroath and its harbour, fishermen's houses and the fish-smoking sheds that still produce the well-known Arbroath Smokie. An image of the drawing may be viewed on request to Art UK.
