The Solway port depicted is Kirkcudbright, where Oppenheimer lived from 1908 onwards. The tower in the background is the Tolbooth. Kirkcudbright had become an artists' colony in the early 1880s. A painting of the same houses, and the River Dee at low tide is within the Atkinson Art Gallery Collection in Southport.
