Haig is represented in Field Marshal’s uniform beneath an open greatcoat. He looks straight ahead and carries in his left hand a rolled-up document. The folds of his great coat are treated in a stylised fashion and these provide continuity between the naturalistic portrait and the monumental charger on which he is seated. The horse’s hind legs are static and arched, whereas the right front leg is raised as if pawing the ground. The horse is reined in so close that its profile is almost vertical, and it appears to be champing at the bit. The horse stands on a wedge-shaped bronze base, higher at the front, where it ends in a Greek scroll, than at the back. The pedestal is square at the front but rounded at the back. To the front is a small stone platform for the laying of wreaths.
