A grisaille, or pen painting, by the Dutch artist Cornelis Pieterse Moojj (c.1635/1645–1693), depicting boats sailing on choppy waters against an ominous sky. Moojj was a Dutch marine painter who specialised in a new type of pen painting emerging in Rotterdam from the 1660s, which involved applying wash to his panels to create a more atmospheric scene (and speed up a lengthy technique that was originally designed to imitate etching). The painting bears de Moojj's typical monogram on the piece of driftwood in the foreground centre: 'C. P. M.'.
