Gerry Fruin attended the Harrow College of Arts and Crafts (1945–1949) then did National Service. On demobilisation he worked in the commercial art world. He was an Associate member of the Guild of Aviation Artists and also exhibited with the Royal Society of Marine Artists. He sold his work mainly as commissioned pieces and has paintings in private collections in Canada, South Africa, Europe and the UK. For many years he was on the design staff for Luton Museum.
