Joseph Milne was an Edinburgh born landscape painter who largely painted in oils. His favoured subjects were the coasts of Scotland and working rivers. Milne came from a family of painters, he was brother the painter William Milne and his son was the painter John McLauchlan Milne. He exhibited a large body of work at both the Royal Scottish Academy and the Glasgow Institute. He also exhibited seven works at the Royal Academy London between 1887 and 1908.

‘Droving Cattle’ is an example of Milne’s work capturing working life in Scotland. His paintings are noted for his strong tone, use of colour and impressionistic style.
