Pilot whales were driven ashore in Shetland until the early twentieth century. The artist visited his cousin in Shetland in 1891 and may have witnessed a whale 'caa', as a number are recorded in the latter decades of the nineteenth century. The hills in the background resemble Garths Ness, suggesting this 'caa' may have taken place in Quendale Bay.
