A bust of Dr William Crotch, depicted in middle age. Crotch is shown head and shoulders, wearing academic robes, mounted on bound copies of two volumes, one titled on the spine 'Palestine', his popular oratorio written in 1812 and said to have been 'the first even moderately successful oratorio composed in England since Handel's day' (ref. Grove). The sculptor lived in the Plymouth area from the 1860s to the 1880s.
