Dr Robert Crucefix (1797–1850) was an outspoken Freemason who established a journal called the 'Freemasons Quarterly Review' in 1834. He was appointed Junior Grand Deacon (JGD) of the United Grand Lodge of England, the governing body of Freemasonry in England and Wales, in 1836. In this portrait he is wearing the regalia of a past holder of this office, whose emblem is a dove. Crucefix was also the instigator of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution in the 1830s. The charity was established to assist elderly Freemasons and this portrait is a copy of an original painted for its headquarters in Croydon. The copy was commissioned by Burlington Lodge, now No.96, of which Crucefix was a member, who then presented it to the United Grand Lodge of England.
