Peter Templeman (1711–1769) was Secretary of the Society from 1760–1769. He was the first to undertake the task of officially registering the Society’s activities in the ‘Historical Register’ or ‘Dr Templeman’s Transactions’, compiled in two volumes and transcribed by Templeman himself. They include extracts from committee minutes, rules and regulations, premium lists, lists of members and transcriptions of miscellaneous correspondence. Templeman had laid the ground-work for the Society’s more comprehensive 'Transactions' begun by his successor Samuel More. This portrait was painted by the artist Richard Cosway, who moved to London to study under William Shipley, a founding member of the Society. In the inaugural competition held by the Society in 1755, Cosway won first prize in the under-14 category for a drawing copy of the subject ‘Compassion.
