A half-length portrait of Dr O. J. R. Howarth, a former curator of Down House. The sitter is posed in front of bookshelves and a drawing of Down House. The frame has a label which reads 'Dr O. J. R. Howarth, secretary of the British Association, 1909–1946, presented by members and friends on his retirement'.

The artist is Robin Darwin, who was the great-grandson of Charles Darwin.
