Dr Charles Leslie Wayper was an eminent historian and Life Fellow of Fitzwilliam College. Beka Smith, daughter of the late Ronald Smith, the concert pianist and former President of the Alkan Society, was originally commissioned to do a pencil sketch of Dr Wayper. On meeting him she was so struck by his personality and character that she decided to execute a painting as well. She entered it into the BP Portrait Award 2006, was shortlisted and voted third in the people's choice.
