The work is painted a brown/orange clay colour. Dr Gilchrist became Medical Assistant at the Crichton Royal Institution, rising to the position of Medical Superintendent, when he pioneered new treatments for psychiatric illness. He was a keen botanist and geologist, and travelled widely in the British Isles and on the Continent. He created a botanical and geological study group at the Crichton Royal, and co-founded The Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society in 1862, becoming its President on two occasions.
