Brought up in a mining village in South Wales, Dr Gareth Owen went on to lead a successful academic career and became Principal of University of Wales, Aberystwyth from 1979 to 1989. His studies in zoology at Cardiff were interrupted by service in the RAF during the Second World War. He lectured at the University of Glasgow from 1950 to 1964, and Queen's University of Belfast from 1964 to 1979. His research interests included electron microscopy, and the morphology of mollusca and brachiopoda.
