in white lettering on the plaque on the front of the pedestal: IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF DOWNPATRICK / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR OTHERS / IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918; and on the right side: THEY SHALL NOT GROW OLD / AS WE THAT ARE LEFT / GROW OLD. / AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM / NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN. / AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN / AND IN THE MORNING, / WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.; and on the left side: IN REMEMBRANCE OF / THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE WORLD WAR / 1939 1945
