Hughes caught the train to Newport College of Art from Dowlais Top Station. On days when it was known the bus for the station would be late, the artist’s father would ask Mr Davies the Guard to delay the train until he was aboard. This was always done as the friendship between Hughes’ father and Mr Davies was so strong.
