Robert Alwyn Hughes was born in 1935 in Dowlais Top near Merthyr Tydfil. He studied Fine Art from 1953 to 1958 at both Newport College of Art and Leicester College of Art. He found inspiration for his work both at home, in the Welsh countryside and its traditions, and also from a more diverse range of cultural and historical moments.
