This painting was made during the awful depression in Merthyr Tydfil when the steelworks closed and many people were unemployed. The artist worked in Dowlais, offering painting and sculpture lessons to workers as a means to try to improve their lives during this difficult time.

This painting is a companion to 'Caeharris Post Office from Gwernlwyn House', and shows a different view of Dowlais around the time of the steelworks closure.
