The painting depicts the coastal town of Dornoch in the county of Sutherland of which it was once the capital. The distinctive form of the thirteenth-century Cathedral which is cruciform with a central spire and the tall crow stepped tower house, formally a sixteenth-century Episcopal Palace, can be seen in Reid's painting in the middle ground to the left.
