Donald Winnicott was a paediatrician, psychoanalyst, author, and broadcaster on mental wellbeing in childhood. His concepts of 'the good-enough mother' and 'transitional object' (comfort blanket) are widely known today. He also wrote on the therapeutic 'holding environment', the meaning of play, and the experience of child evacuees in the Second World War. The Winnicott Trust donated this sculpture to the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1990. The trust explained that Winnicott referred to the 'discipline of Psychiatry as the over-all science in the study of Mankind.…therefore, it would be the proper hall of fame in which to have a bust made by this distinguished sculptor (Oscar Nemon) who did figures of Winston Churchill, Mountbatten and so on.
