The sitter was a senior British pathologist and professor of forensic medicine, who carried out some of the most famous autopsies of the day, including on Bruce Lee and Jimi Hendrix.

The artist, Stephen Dyonis Elek was originally from Hungary. He was emeritus professor of medical microbiology in the University of London and honorary consulting bacteriologist to St George’s Hospital. His interests spanned not only bacteriology, immunology and virology but also the arts, the law and business. He was an international authority on staphylococcus.
