This painting captures the character of St Ives with its winding cobbled streets and colour-washed stone cottages. The town crowds the top half of the painting which draws the viewer into the maze of houses. To the left, you can see the harbour. St Ives was originally a fishing community but is now one of the most famous holiday resorts in Cornwall.

The painting’s title means ‘it is sweet to do nothing’ in Italian.

The artist was born in Russian Turkestan and became a General in the Russian Imperial Army.
