'Dogs Pointing Pheasants' was one of a set of four overdoors (with P627, P629 and P631) commissioned by the financier Daniel-Charles Trudaine for his château at Montigny-Lencoup, near Paris, which later became a hunting lodge for Louis XV (cf. Boucher P482 and P489). Their uneven quality suggests that Oudry’s son, Jacques-Charles Oudry (q.v.), may have helped with their execution, although preparatory drawings confirm that the designs were by his father.
