Diana Sokol, the daughter of the artist, later Professor Diana Deutsch, who graduated from St Anne's College in 1959. The sculptor Max Sokol was born in Warsaw, Poland on 2nd April 1895. He went to Germany as a young man, and studied art there, first in Stettin and then in Berlin. He immigrated to England in 1937 and became a naturalised citizen in 1947. He died in London on 21st June 1973. After arriving in England, Sokol rapidly established himself as a distinguished and highly respected member of the art community. His works were exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and other art galleries around the country. He saw art as a reflection of life, and as an expressionist he vividly depicted both the sorrows and the triumphs of the human spirit.
