Derek Wood graduated from University College, Oxford, in 1960 with a BA in Classics, followed by an MA and a BCL. He read for the Bar as a member of the Middle Temple, was called to the Bar in 1964 and became a QC in 1978. He was Recorder of the Crown Court (1985–2002) and also a Deputy High Court Judge and Deputy Official Referee. During his tenure as Principal he oversaw a major expansion of the College, both physically with the Maplethorpe building and the opening up of the West Lawn area and also with a significant increase in number of both students and Fellows.
