The presence of tam-o'-shanter hats in the figure group at right, nearly all older people and children of apparently limited prosperity, suggests they are members of a Scottish community watching its young men sail west, in advance perhaps, as emigrants to seek better fortune for them. The dress also suggests no earlier than about 1840. It is not convincingly a picture of the 'Mayflower' departing from Plymouth in 1620, and how that title arose is unknown.
