When 31 year old Katie Pratt was announced winner of the 2001 Jerwood Painting Prize she became the youngest to be awarded the £30,000 prize money. Although this work takes its title from the bright blue flower it is a purely abstract work. The heavily worked and, in places, dense surface is typical of Pratt’s technique. The hairs that broke off from the soft paint brush she used have been incorporated into the surface of the work itself.
