This was completed just after the death of Nash's father in February 1929. The withered potted plant on the windowsill of his Judd Street flat is set within a matrix of geometrical shapes, including a set square and ruler, the tools of the draughtsman. It demonstrates Nash's love of contrast and odd juxtaposition, particularly the organic and the man-made. It has been suggested by the art historian Andrew Causey that the draughtsman's tools in this picture indicate a concept of the 'artist as geometer', who can gain some control over organic life.
