As well as the prominently displayed dead goose, this large-scale vertical composition includes a still life of dead partridge, pheasant and fruit with living pigeons and a springer spaniel in a parkland setting. Painted the year before the artist’s death, its execution is somewhat tired compared to other works by the artist in The Wallace Collection. It is also Weenix’s last known dated work. It was probably commissioned by Count von Schönborn for the decoration of Schloss Weissenstein, Pommersfelden, built between 1711 and 1723, demonstrating the appeal of Weenix’s decorative still lifes to the German nobility at the beginning of the eighteenth century.
