This painting uses symbols, or allegory, to convey a sombre message relating to the First World War (1914–1918). It reflects the feelings of the artist who lost friends and relatives on the battlefields.

Look for the unusual use of thin, wiped paint for the night mist, and the brighter colours of dawn, thickly applied with a palette knife.

Mostyn moved to Torquay from the North of England just as the war ended. His style of painting changed after the move, perhaps influenced by the seaside light.
