Elected as an MP in 1895, and entered the House of Lords in 1913. After the war, responsible for bringing bread supplies back to normal. He was promoted to the Cabinet in 1922, but the coalition government collapsed later that year, and he resigned from politics. Crawford embarked on a second career in the arts, becoming a trustee of the British Museum and chairman of the Royal Fine Arts Commission. He was chairman of the National Art Collections Fund, set up to prevent America buying up Britain's treasures. He produced a study of Donatello (1903) and The Evolution of Italian Sculpture (1909). His political diaries, published in 1984, give an important account of pre-1914 Tory politics.
