Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Mason came to England aged fourteen to train at the Royal Ballet School. A technically strong dancer, noted for her dramatic sense, she became a principal in 1968, Principal Répétiteur (teacher) in 1984, Assistant Director of the Royal Ballet in 1991 and succeeded Ross Stretton as Director in 2002.
