Dame Margaret Elizabeth Harvey Turner-Warwick (b.1924) was born in London and studied medicine at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, and University College Hospital, London. After qualifying, she practised medicine at University College Hospital and the Royal Brompton Hospital. Turner-Warwick specialised in thoracic medicine and became senior lecturer at the Institute of Diseases of the Chest. In 1972 she was appointed professor of thoracic medicine at the Cardiothoracic Institute (University of London), and later Dean from 1984 to 1987. She was the first female president of the Royal College of Physicians, 1989–1992, and chairman of the Royal Devon and Exeter Healthcare NHS Trust (1992–1995).
