Dame Genevieve Ward, who sang under the name Ginevra Guerrabella prior to her career as a dramatic actress, is painted in theatrical costume in the title role of Vincenzo Bellini's opera 'Norma'. She wears a classical robe and is laureated. The sitter is depicted bust-length, turned to the right, looking down with her face resting on her left hand.
