'Cypher Piece' by Frances Pelly is one of ten contemporary sculptures collectively known as the 'Eden Benchmarks', a creative venture commissioned by the East Cumbria Countryside Project. This was designed both to mark the new millennium but also to provide a way for people to creatively engage with the landscape, raising awareness for the need of its conservation. Ten different artists carved each sculpture, working closely with local people and the landscape to create site-specific artworks that responded to the environment and river around them. The form of 'Cypher Piece' undulates and curves like the water next to which it lies, suggestive of both the moving river but also somewhat of a human body, inextricably linking the two. References to a more human nature are also found in the variety of images carved into the rounded stone, these including a Celtic horse's head, fish and decorations from a Norse tomb.
