The figure of Cupid has been detached from a version of the group of 'Apollo and Cupid' executed by Duquesnoy as a pair to the better known 'Mercury and Cupid' for Marchese Vincenzo Giustinaniani. Only two versions of the 'Apollo and Cupid' are known, one in the Lichtenstein Collection, the other in the Royal Palace, Madrid. Formerly covered with green paint to simulate corrosion and give a fake antique patina, the Cupid seems to have been sold to Sir James Erskine in Rome around 1800 as a classical bronze. its authenticity as by the hand of Duquesnoy is, however, substantiated by a mention in Bellori's biography of the sculptor. The Cupids and accessories were always cast separately and fixed onto the main figure later. Several other detached Cupids by Duquesnoy exist.
