This painting was very personal to both Kenneth and his wife, Eleanor. In 1958, when Kenneth was painting at the fashionable Cubitt’s Yacht Basin, near Richmond Bridge, the couple met for the first time. Eleanor was staying on a barge there, when she was intrigued to see a young artist sketching. When she asked to see his work she was amazed to see the quality of his drawings. A romance blossomed and they were soon married. When asked in a BBC Radio Kent interview (9 July 1994) what it was like being married to Kenneth, Eleanor commented: 'It was like being married to Christmas. It was exciting, it was thrilling. Every day something exciting – the thrill of another picture. He was wonderful. He was extremely sensitive, extremely kind. He could be incredibly arrogant, and he hated Philistines.
