David B. MacKay trained in his younger days in a chartered accountant's office in Glasgow. He came back to Crail to look after his father who was then in business as a large fishcurer. After his father's death, he assisted his uncle in Crail and in his spare time started painting. He became a prolific painter in watercolour and oil of scenes around the burgh and countryside. He exhibited in Edinburgh and Glasgow as well as in Crail. He was also a member of the Town Council for several years.
